VIETNAM: North to South

My ultimate travel adventure in 2007 with buddy Lu Yi --- Vietnam from the tip down to its tail.

HANOI --- We didn't expect much from Hanoi but we fell in love with its Old Quarter. Busy, noisy and full of character, it is a street photographer's delight.

SAPA --- This place in the highlands of northwest Vietnam is like Sagada but with loads of costumed ethnic minority people. We did the Sapa Market. We trekked with the Black Hmongs. Went on a day-trip to BAC HA and gawked at the colorful people. Sapa/Bac Ha is my 2nd fave, after Halong.

HALONG BAY --- We realized that to cruise Halong Bay, one can either go budget (under US$50, with a million other people in the boat) or high end (over US$100). There's no mid range. We searched the length of Ma May Street in Hanoi for a suitable cruise. Following a lengthy deliberation, we, the backpackers with credit cards, finally decided to splurge on a 2-day cruise onboard a stylish junk that fits only 6 stylish people. Nyaha! Halong Bay ...

A long-overdue post. We shot Tami and Yuyeth at the Tang Dynasty ruins in Dec last year. Now that I have the time, I'm finding that I don't have many photos to post. Haaay... Anyway, it was a fun shoot and the girls were so patient. These are for you girls.

Mountain Province, Philippines

Ah, finally, Sagada!!!

Went there over the New Year with my cousin Ivo and his girl Dina. Our trio multiplied as Ivo's friend Gawani joined us and played host to us, and Swedish solo traveler Ellen somehow got stuck with us =). We met Aussie girls Sarah and Ami at the caves. And then there's Ivo's energetic mates from UP Mountaineers. All made this trip so much fun.

We did the so-called Cave Connection --- that's 4.5 hours of caving adventure that started by going down a hole at the Lumiang Burial Cave and emerging at the cavernous Sumaging Cave. It was the wildest thing I've done last year after swimming with the whale sharks.

We joined Gawani's family in welcoming the new year in their windswept hometown of Besao. There, we witnessed how the Igorot people celebrate the new year with a Gong!!!

The Vietnam Travelers

Planning for this Vietnam trip involved many nights researching on the net. The Vietnam forums are full of warnings about scams. I have not felt so anxious about a trip, especially that we were traveling independently.

I flew into Hanoi where I met with my intrepid travel buddy Lu Yi. Together, we traversed Vietnam from the north on the border with China, down to the south where Cambodia is a few paddles away.

The warnings I read about turned out to be true. We experienced a couple of them. But they were easily outweighed by the great experience we had and by the helpful local people we met along the way. Vietnam is a beautiful country with smiling, hardworking people. No wonder people go over in droves to visit. I've not seen so many travelers since Bangkok.

I'm still sorting through the gazillions of travel photos I took. For now, I thought I'd post the ones with our faces in them as there's not that many =)

Kapitan Florencio

Last weekend, I was on the Cebu Pacific evening flight from Manila to Singapore. Flying on a budget airline means you provide your own entertainment. Mine came in the form of an iPod cranked to full blast to drown my seatmate's snoring. In no time, I joined my seatmate in a little duet.

Then a woman's voice came over the speakers.

I thought it was one of the crew announcing something but the voice said "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking...".

What?!

I sat upright and listened in awe as the Captain went on and delivered the usual blah about the flight and weather condition. Not that I'm so interested about Singapore weather but in the many miles that I have flown, this is the first time that a sister is THE pilot. Her name is Mayra Florencio.

I listened intently to everything the Captain said like I was receiving instructions for an emergency landing. When she finished, I felt like getting down on my knees, thrust both arms up and down and praise: "You ...

Ayutthaya, Thailand

Wats, wats everywhere. At the end of our 2-day trip to Ayutthaya, we swore we didn't want to see another wat =)

Ayutthaya is a mere 2-hr train ride from Bangkok. But there's so many, er, wats to see in this charming place that a day trip will be suicide. We stayed at a backpackers place called PU Inn. Like Bangkok, the street food was a delight. And the wats... less ornate version of Angkor but they amazed me just the same.

One Night In Bangkok

One day and one night. That's exactly how long I stayed in Bangkok. My cousin Lorelei and I went to visit our good friend Jofelle in Bangkok. Saw the usual touristy sights, feasted on yummy street food and went on a shopping and shooting spree at Chatuchak market. Had an early night's rest (no Patpong for us) for the following day we're off to Ayutthaya.

By the way, Jof gave me copies of the Asianews magazine that published my Boracay and Beijing photos in 2 of their issues. What to do upon seeing your photo published for the first time? Squeal in delight, that's what I did. It was gratis tho. Sana next time may bayad na hehe.

Isang Araw Sa Singapore

Linggo, walang trabaho.

Singapore Supports Sorsogon

Singapore Supports Sorsogon is the project that brought us -- 23 volunteers from Singapore and Manila -- to the sleepy town of Prieto Diaz in Sorsogon province. We helped to build houses for Gawad Kalinga. The beneficiaries are the families whose houses are constantly battered by typhoons. They are a hardy bunch of people. Lots of lessons learned from this trip including why construction workers eat like construction workers.

We helped to build for only a few days. The beneficiaries have been toiling for 2 months. Volunteer groups came before us but there are 50+ houses yet to be built. I hope more volunteers help out before the next typhoon season comes.

Road Trip to Sepang

Ten photography enthusiasts drove from Singapore to Sepang to watch the Malaysian Grand Prix. Endured 2 hours waiting in line at the sauna called Johor Bahru Immigration. Stopped by Malacca and KL and did the touristy thing. Then on to the Sepang circuit for an explosion of sounds, sights and sweat.

A punishing 3-day trip but a good chance to learn from the photography masters. It was also my first F1 race. Not that I'm a fan now.

Photos taken with Nikon D200 and some with Canon G7.

Swimming with the Whale Shark!

The Spotter stands high up a ledge on the boat and scans the bay for a sign of the butanding (whale shark). When he spots one, he signals to our Butanding Interaction Officer (BIO), the boat slows down to a stop and...

"READY!"

Upon hearing this command from our BIO, we'd scurry and put on our fins and masks. Then we'd jump off the boat and swim after the butanding. The first sight of the giant fish gliding just a few feet below us drew underwater squeals of awe and delight. The plankton-rich waters of Donsol made it hard to see the whole body of the butanding hence the need to swim after it or dive down for a closer look.

Each interaction lasted from a few seconds to a few glorious minutes. They were so adrenalin-charged that we're exhausted by the 6th butanding. Plus, putting the mask and fins on and off each time was a real bummer. As our travel buddy Luis had nicely put it: "Punyeta, pagod na kami"... So, we just viewed the next 2 butandings from the comfort of our boat....

We stayed in a hotel filled to the brim with artwork by prolific Mindanao artist Kublai Millan. We walked along its dimly lit corridors half expecting the art installations to come alive and grab us.

The trip had its many unforgettable firsts for me:
1. First time that I forgot to take Polgas along with me
2. First trip with my new camera
3. First time that I forgot to pack my cam's battery charger and spare battery (!!!)
4. First time (and hopefully not the last) to meet with my Multiply friend Maej
5. First time to have acupuncture (better than massage)

Many many thanks to Mandy and Maej who made sure that we dined in the best holes-in-the-wall in Davao, that we didnt have to take the jeepney to the airport, for showing us around the city and last but not the least, for introducing us to the high of acupunture aah, aah, ooh, ooh, yeesss, zzzzz!...
Shanghai girl in Manila

My Chinese friend Luyi came to visit over Christmas and we did a whirlwind tour of Manila, Boracay and Palawan. All in one week. Gasp! She remarked on how beautiful the islands are, that shopping is so much better in Manila than Shanghai and that our firecrackers are pffft! hee

Hala Bira!

Now I know why the Kalibo Ati-Atihan is called the mother of all Philippine festivals. Its fun, its rowdy, its solemn religious processions alternating with street dancing and binge drinking. The pounding of the drums makes even the unwilling to stomp their feet. For me, the highlight was after the sunday Mass at the plaza when the priest shouted "Viva kay Senor Santo Nino", and the crowd roared "Viva!" and hoisted their Santo Ninos in celebration. Then all the drums beat furiously in unison, playing one tune, as the street dancing resumed. Its amazing. Love it, love it... Plus I got the bonus of homestaying in a funky old house and meeting many interesting
